• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Chris Sawyer -- A Balanced Look at Collin Chapman : I devoured this book. I know some of my former colleagues at Lotus who worked with Chapman bristle at books that purport to dissect the man and his motives, but I couldn't find anyone who said anything really biting about Ludvigsen's book. Yes, it's an armchair psychology session to some extent. However, the author doesn't delve deeply into Chapman's public foibles, but seeks so analyze what made him make the choices he did at various stages throughout his life, and why he pursued certain technological paths. Thus, Chapman doesn't come off looking like a heartless bastard (as some have portrayed him) or a massive opportunist. He's a man with failings (some rather large) who is imperfect, but moved the design of racing and road cars along farther and faster than any of his contemporaries. And Ludvigsen shows you how he did it... as well as the many mistakes he made along the way. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2015 )

The subject has suffered through a blizzard of attempts by other authors just recycling the same old quotes from previous attempts starting from "Lotus, the story of the marque" and "The story of Lotus 1947-1960" by Ian Smith. It goes into great detail about his influences and how he influenced, and in fact, revolutionized racing, F1 and sports cars in general, and still today, thanks to him, Lotus makes the best handling cars in the world. Ludvigsen goes in detail through the major components of the racing car- engine, transmission, suspension, aerodynamics - and explains how Chaoman's thinking as to each evolved over time. There is also very interesting discussion of his relationships with his drivers, colleagues and others, revealing Chapman's personal style. Plenty of good illustrations and photos.
